BOOGALOO BABY

THE BAND

Boogaloo Baby was founded by drummer Philippe Combelle in 2002 in order to resusitate this nearly extinct musical genre and introduce the style to a new generation of Europeans hungry for funky rhythms.

To aid in this task he recruited American Jazz guitarist and blues singer Jeff Hoffman, Philippe Petit, one of Europe's finest organists, and African saxophonist Jean-Jacques Elangué, a real coup-de-coeur for the public.

Three generations of musicians from three different continents are represented in Boogaloo Baby.

The main caracteristic of the band, which you can hear in the album, but which is best experienced LIVE is the fun and pleasure that these 4 musicians have when playing together.

The music is mostly Boogaloo with a Blues sensitivity, Philippe Petit and Jumpin' Jeff have also brought their own compositions which are fully integrated into the style.

The sound is energic, full of warmth and swing, but at the core it's the blues pure and simple. But whatever the influences, the game plan is always the same: TO BURN, and make you jump out of your seat and move your derriere. Enjoy !

Permanent members of Boogaloo Baby are:
Jeff Hoffman - guitars & Vocals
Jean-Jacques Elangué - Tenor Sax
Philippe Petit - Hammond B3 & Fender Rhodes
Philippe Combelle - Drums & Percussions

THE STYLE

In the mid sixties the boogaloo a popular dance similar to the jitterburg burst out of the ghetto and spread like wildfire across America, capturing the hearts of not only black Americans, but also of white teenagers.

Since then the boogaloo has become an inseparable element in rhythm & blues, soul music and soul jazz, eventually evolving into funk music. Boogaloo also describes a very groovy and danceable rhythm in the drummer's bag of tricks.

This gospel based style is influenced by rhythms of Latin America and New Orleans as well as the blues of Chicago and Philadelphia.

A classical Boogaloo band usually comprises 3 to 4 musicians: Guitar, B3 Organ and Drums, plus a Tenor Sax and or a Trumpet, most of the time accompanied by percussions (congas).

The great masters of the genre are Jimmy Smith, "Brother" Jack Mc Duff, Jimmy Mc Griff, Johnny "Hammond" Smith, Richard "Groove" Holmes, Charles Earland or more recently, "Papa" John de Francesco or his son , Joey de Francesco.

As we can see most of the "boogaloo representatives" are organists, but we find also names like Gene Ammons, Sonny Stitt, Hank Crawford, Houston Person at the Tenor Sax, or Grant Green, George Benson, Pat Martino and even the great Wes Montgommery at the guitar. As far as drummers are concerned, emblematic names are also, and moreover, known for their inimitable "funky" grooves: Bernard Purdie, Idriss Muhammad, or Clyde Stubberfield and Jabo Starck (drummers of James Brown) even if great jazz names also played the style successfully, like Donald Bailey and Buddy Tate.
